HPE is deploying its Alletra Storage MP X10000 for a new role: storing inference state that would otherwise be evicted from costly GPU memory and recomputed later.
In tests validated with NVIDIA H2000 GPUs, the Kamiwaza AI platform and HPE Alletra MP X10000, the setup delivered up to 20× faster time to first token and 17× higher effective inference throughput compared to running without KV cache offload.
The GPUs did not grow smarter; they simply had less redundant work to perform.
These results bring storage choices directly into AI economic discussions. Model pricing draws plenty of focus, but paying premium accelerators to reprocess identical context deserves attention too.
This is especially true as enterprises shift from simple chatbots answering isolated questions toward agentic workflows, where one request triggers a chain of complex tasks.
Agentic systems suffer from repetition
These workflows repeatedly process documents, system instructions and conversation history. One agent fetches data, another evaluates it, a third validates results, and later steps revisit content the system has already handled.
Some repetition is unavoidable, but recalculating everything is not.
KV cache stores intermediate attention state so matching requests can reuse prior computations. Keeping this cache accessible cuts work before the model produces its next response.
GPU memory, however, is limited and expensive.
Long contexts and concurrent sessions compete for this memory. When reusable cache is evicted and needed again, the inference engine must rebuild it, adding GPU load and latency with no new insight.
HPE Alletra MP X10000 acts as a shared tier for offloaded cache, while RDMA for S3 speeds up storage I/O. The core value: fetch reusable context instead of forcing GPUs to recompute it.
Compute once, reuse often. The principle is unremarkable — until the redundant cycles appear on the infrastructure bill.
The 20× speedup came from Kamiwaza-verified testing using NVIDIA Nemotron 70B with over 30 concurrent agents under long-context, multi-agent inference.
This workload is meaningful because overlapping context and memory pressure make cache reuse highly valuable here, unlike short, unrelated prompts with little shared context.
These headline gains are workload-dependent. Context length, concurrency, cache hit rate and transfer overhead all shape the outcome. Twenty times faster is a test result, not a universal guarantee.
Buyers must verify apples-to-apples comparisons: the same workload, run with and without KV cache offload, at concurrency levels matching production.
The key metric is how much redundant computation their applications can eliminate, and whether pulling cached data beats rebuilding it.
A large performance figure without its test conditions is little more than marketing.
Cache reuse cuts redundant computation. It cannot fix poor retrieval that dumps massive unrelated document archives into prompts for a single question.
HPE pairs the X10000 with its Data Fabric for controlled access to distributed data. The X10000’s data intelligence node generates metadata, classification and embeddings at ingestion, helping applications retrieve targeted context.
This shifts data preparation to the point of ingestion, instead of forcing every application team to build separate downstream pipelines.
The economics are clear: more accurate retrieval reduces irrelevant prompt content and failed retries.
Enterprise repositories hold vast document volumes; the harder challenge is separating active policies from outdated revisions and duplicate files.
Governance is equally critical when agents retrieve and act on data. Fast access to unauthorized information is not meaningful progress.
HPE therefore has two economic levers: improve what enters inference, then reuse computation where feasible.
This distinction matters. Better retrieval shrinks prompt size and retries. KV cache reuse cuts processing load; it does not automatically reduce output length or lower API charges.
Cache offload is now a crowded market. HPE’s advantage lies in bundling this capability with data preparation and governance, rather than just adding another checkbox feature.
For organizations seeking better AI returns, the real test is how seamlessly data preparation, governance and cache reuse function as one unified system.
Can applications locate relevant, authorized data without redundant copying and processing? Can the inference engine store and retrieve reusable context efficiently? Does the combined platform maintain steady throughput as context windows and agent numbers expand?
These questions link architecture to real business results.
Buyers should request cache hit rates, time to first token and sustained throughput measured on their own workloads. They also need to assess retrieval quality and task success. A faster incorrect answer is still wrong, no matter how impressive benchmark charts look.
Cost per terabyte remains important — and so does the cost of making a GPU reprocess the same background material repeatedly.
